The Maine Coast

Painting the Maine coast is very different from painting the lowcountry.  There are the obvious differences in landscapes- the rocky beaches, blueberry barrens, and the birches and pointed firs that line the coast vary drastically from the softer forms of Live Oaks and marsh grass.  But to me the biggest difference is the light.  It seems clearer and more stark than Southern light, and the shadows are deeper and cooler.  It is so energizing to get to go back and forth between these to very different subjects- while still getting to explore painting water, reflections, trees and shadows.
